About the album

Maja and Daniel: We are overjoyed to be presenting this new recording “Pas de deux”, with many new pieces by composer friends - it’s a project that’s very close to our hearts. The great Sonata by Ravel is in a way our kaleidoscope, a looking glass that takes us both back and forward in time, and both of those simultaneously.

Our journey begins with the slightest of pieces. ‘Raindrops’ is a charming vignette by the 10 year old Sibelius, whose love of nature would a decade or so later of course give us some of the greatest works in the symphonic repertoire.
Deeply moved by the death of Pope John Paul II Penderecki in 2005 wrote the Ciaconna in memoriam Giovanni Paulo II Ciaconna, for string orchestra. His transcription of the piece is a self-contained, independent artistic statement: subtle and virtuosic, filled with emotions of a genuinely Romantic kind.

The Interior Castle by Peteris Vasks was a text written by St. Teresa of Ávila, Spanish Carmelite nun and famed mystic, in 1577 as a guide for spiritual development through service and prayer. The work is conceived as a tryptich of pure, deeply felt, reverential music, interrupted my two frenetic, disturbing, dark passages. The love and belief conquers the dark forces.
We asked our friend Craig White to arrange a Debussy piano prelude and he created for this disc this beautiful version of the 9th piano prelude of Book 1.

Sicilian cellist/composer Giovanni Sollima is one of the most colorful, eclectic, musical personalities of his generation. Heimat Terra: the title is based on a beautiful text by the anthropologist Edgar Morin.

Marcelo Nisinman is one of the great tango artists of our time, a brilliant bandoneon virtuoso and great friend as well as a uniquely personal, eclectic composer of music that is deeply infused by the world of tango but very aware of classical avant-gardistic writing.
Marcelo Nisinman got to know Astor Piazzolla as a child, when Piazzolla and his quintet used to come to rehearse at his parents apartment in central Buenos Aires. From Marcelo we heard many stories about Piazzolla, his passion for boxing and shark fishing, his motto ‘no risk, no life’ and his larger than life personality. It seems fitting to end this record with three early ‘Parisian’ tangos that Piazzolla wrote while living in the city in the early 1950’s.
Kleurrijk en levendig, en een project dat hen na aan het hart ligt, dat is het album Pas de deux van violist Daniel Rowland en celliste Maja Bogdanović. Er staan veel nieuwe stukken op van bevriende hedendaagse componisten, maar ook werken van Sibelius, Debussy, Ravel en Piazzolla. Alle kleuren van de regenboog komen voorbij.

We nemen je mee op reis met Daniel en Maja. Die reis begint bij Regendruppels, een charmante muzikale schets van de tienjarige Jean Sibelius. Zijn liefde voor de natuur zou ons een tiental jaar later enkele van de grootste werken binnen het symfonisch repertoire bezorgen.

Diep geraakt door de dood van paus Johannes Paul II in 2005, schreef de Poolse componist Krzysztof Penderecki de 'Ciaconna', een in memoriam voor deze overleden paus. In de vorm van een klaagzang en bestemd voor een strijkorkest. Zijn transcriptie van het stuk is een opzichzelfstaande, onafhankelijke, artistieke verklaring: subtiel en virtuoos, vol ware romantische emotie.

De Letse Pēteris Vasks zette een tekst van de heilige Teresa van Ávila op muziek. Zij was een Spaanse karmelietes en befaamd mysticus, die in 1577 een leidraad schreef voor spirituele ontwikkeling door dienst en gebed. Het Innerlijke Kasteel is een driedelige compositie van pure, diep gevoelde, eerbiedige muziek, onderbroken door twee razende, rustverstorende, onheilspellende passages. Maar de liefde en het geloof overwinnen de donkere krachten.

De twee musici smeekten hun vriend Craig White een arrangement te maken van een piano prelude van Debussy. Speciaal voor deze cd schreef hij een wonderlijk mooie versie van Debussy's negende piano prelude uit boek 1. Ook Maurice Ravel had Debussy voor ogen toen hij zijn prachtige sonate, ter herinnering aan hem, componeerde. Door Daniel Rowland en Maja Bogdanović gezien als hun caleidoscoop, een vergrootglas dat hen gelijktijdig, zowel heen en terug in de tijd brengt.

En dan zijn we aanbeland bij de 58-jarige, Siciliaanse cellist en componist Giovanni Sollima. In de muziekwereld een van de meest kleurrijke en eclectische persoonlijkheden van zijn generatie en iemand die het hart van muziekminnend Nederland heeft gestolen. Hij schreef Heimat Terra, de titel komt van een wonderschone tekst van de antropoloog Edgar Morin.

De reis vindt zijn einde bij de tango, bij Marcelo Nisinman en Astor Piazzolla. Nisinman is een van de grootste tango artiesten van deze tijd, een briljante bandoneon virtuoos en bevriend met Daniel en Maja. Hij is een unieke persoonlijke, selectieve componist, die muziek maakt, diep doortrokken van de wereld van de tango, maar die zich tegelijkertijd zeer bewust is van de klassieke avantgardistische muziek. Hij leerde Astor Piazzolla al als kind kennen toen Piazzolla en zijn kwintet thuis bij zijn ouders in het centrum van Buenos Aires kwamen repeteren. Marcelo vertelde heel wat verhalen over Piazzolla, over zijn voorliefde voor het boksen en de haaienvangst, zijn motto 'zonder risico geen leven' en zijn levensgrote persoonlijkheid. Het past dan ook om deze reis af te sluiten met drie vroege 'Parijse' tango's, die Astor Piazzolla schreef toen hij daar woonde begin jaren 1950.
Maja und Daniel: Wir sind überglücklich, diese neue Aufnahme "Pas de deux" mit vielen neuen Stücken von befreundeten Komponisten zu präsentieren - es ist ein Projekt, das uns sehr am Herzen liegt. Die große Sonate von Ravel ist gewissermaßen unser Kaleidoskop, ein Spiegel, der uns in der Zeit zurück und vorwärts führt, und zwar beides gleichzeitig.

Unsere Reise beginnt mit dem allerersten Stück. Regentropfen" ist eine charmante Vignette des 10-jährigen Sibelius, dessen Liebe zur Natur uns ein Jahrzehnt später natürlich einige der größten Werke des symphonischen Repertoires bescheren würde.

In recent seasons Daniel has performed with concertos ranging from Beethoven to Brahms, Elgar, Berg, Korngold, Weinberg and Prokofiev, with conductors such as Heinz Holliger, Jaap van Zweden, François-Xavier Roth, Lawrence Foster, Antony Hermus and Rossen Milanov. A passionate chamber musician, Daniel has performed with artists as diverse as Ivry Gitlis, Heinz Holliger, Martha Argerich, Michael Collins, Lars Vogt, Giovanni Sollima, Marcelo Nisinman, Willard White and Elvis Costello. Daniel is one half of acclaimed duo partnerships with pianist Natacha Kudritskaya with whom he earlier recorded for Champs Hill Records a disc dedicated to the Enescu Sonatas (‘a perfect partnership’ – BBC Music Magazine), and with cellist Maja Bogdanovic, whose recent duo CD ‘Pas de deux’ (Challenge Records) was described as ‘a magical meeting between violin and cello’ by Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad. In 2005 Daniel founded the Stift International Music Festival in the bucolic region of Twente in the eastern Netherlands, where he grew up, with the 15th century Stiftkerk as the main venue. The festival has garnered acclaim as one of great intimacy, adventure and atmosphere. Daniel was for twelve years the leader of the Brodsky Quartet, performing all over the world, and making numerous recordings, including the celebrated Shostakowitch Cycle.

Daniel was born in London, and started his violin lessons in Enschede after his parents moved to Twente in the eastern Netherlands. He studied with Jan Repko, Davina van Wely, Herman Krebbers, Viktor Liberman, Igor Oistrakh and Ivry Gitlis. His violin is by Lorenzo Storioni (Cremona 1796), and his bow is a Maline, kindly loaned by the Dutch Instrument Foundation. He teaches at the Royal College of Music in London. He lives in Amsterdam with his partner, cellist Maja Bogdanovic´.

As a slow and painstaking worker, Ravel composed fewer pieces than many of his contemporaries. Among his works to enter the repertoire are pieces for piano, chamber music, two piano concertos, ballet music, two operas, and eight song cycles; he wrote no symphonies and only one religious work. Many of his works exist in two versions: a first, piano score and a later orchestration. Some of his piano music, such as Gaspard de la nuit (1908), is exceptionally difficult to play, and his complex orchestral works such as Daphnis et Chloé (1912) require skilful balance in performance.

Sibelius wrote several impressive symphonic poems - among which Finlandia, Lemminkäinen-suite, Oceaniden, Tapiola - for he took inspiration from the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic.  He was just as original as a symphonist: his Seven Symphonies are just as much answers to the question how the genre should develop after Tchaikovsky's death.

His music has been played by classical performers such as Yo-Yo Ma, Riccardo Muti, Antonio Pappano, Daniele Gatti, Gidon Kremer with the Kremerata Baltica, Ivan Fischer, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Manchester Camerata, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and the pop stars Patti Smith, Larry Coryell, Mauro Pagani, Stefano Bollani, Elisa (protagonist of his opera Ellis Island).
For cinema and television he composed for Peter Greenaway (The Tulse Luper Suitcases and Nightwatching), John Turturro (Evidence for a Sicilian Tragedy), Carlos Saura (La Jota), Marco Tullio Giordana (One Hundred Steps and The Best Youth), and Lasse Gjertsen (Daydream). For the theater he wrote and performed music for directors such as Robert Wilson, Alessandro Baricco and Peter Stein. In the dance field he collaborated with many great choreographers, such as Karole Armitage, Bebe Miller and Carolyn Carlson who, at the Venice Biennale, made him play on stage, among the dancers, using his scenic charisma.
As a soloist, or with different instrumental groups, he performed his compositions all over the world, at prestigious venues, as well as alternative ones, nearer to the younger audience, such as the Knitting Factory in New York, a real underground temple. Remarkable is the cello performance in the Sahara Desert and the one underwater in a sicilian’ gebbia (a tank for irrigation’ water).
In 2012 he had been the main creator and the artistic director of the explosive musical ensemble of the 100 Cellos, which in six years had performed with his "Itinerant Festival" in Rome, Milan, Budapest, Turin, Ravenna and Lucca.
Sollima plays a cello by Francesco Ruggeri (Cremona, 1679). Moreover he uses in his creations western and eastern acoustic instruments and electrical and electronic tools, mixed with others of his own invention, such as the aquilarco, and others especially made for him, like the tenor violin present in the paintings of Caravaggio and an ice-cello that in the winter of 2007 he played at 3200 meters above sea level, in an igloo’ theater built in a glacier of the Dolomites.
Since 2010, he's been teaching at the National Academy of Santa Cecilia, where he was awarded the title of Academician.

From 1963 to 1978, he played the double bass in the Lithuanian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Latvian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Latvian Radio Orchestra.  Besides that, he also studied composition from 1973 to 1978 at the Latvian Academy of Music under Valentin Utkin.
